April 22, 2015: If You Could Live Abroad for a Year Where Would You Live?

John Holman was our excellent toastmaster for this April 22, 2015 meeting. John’s introduction by Wen He congratulated John as a newly engaged toastmaster to be married soon. John blushed and opened the meeting with a saying from Rudyard Kipling ; “How to really understand what makes a place is to SMELL It.” He also told us that what makes understanding a place is to experience EVERYDAY things as if it was the FIRST time experience.

Kyle Sekiya our inspiration speaker recited Adolf Hitler for our inspiration. Kyle stated that Adolf Hitler took advantage of people that were motivated by anger and not thinking about what they were doing. Adolf Hitler managed to rally the German people to conquer their enemies through using their anger emotions. He instead encouraged his fellow toastmasters to think and be motivated by thinking. Katie Stula our Grammarian gave us a new word; “Skookum” as the word of the day to describe the brave and impressive toastmasters speaking today.

James Smith gave his speech titled, “Know Your Shot” He then spoke about a sport he loved; Ice Hockey. James explained how to understand the 4 basic shots of Ice Hockey. 1) Shoveling Shot 2) Slap Shot, 3) Snap Shot and 4) Back-Hand Shot. James used a couple props; a miniature hockey stick with a bottle cap puck to demonstrate how to recognize the 4 shots. James quoted Wayne Gretzky, Hockey Pro ,” You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

Eddie Joseph was wearing a beautiful lei as he delivered a non-manual speech on the “Three Secrets of Successful Speech.” Eddie quoted Aristotle on the triangle of rhetorical speaking secrets. At the point of each corner of the triangle were the three secrets. First No.1) Ethos: Credibility & Trust No. 2) Pathos: emotions and imagination and No. 3) Logos: consistency & Logic. Eddie encouraged that a speaker should not rely on others to provide you a credible introduction. Instead for the speaker to be prepared with an introduction that builds the credibility about yourself without having to brag about yourself. Speakers should connect with their audience to offer an emotional appeal to their speeches. Provide a logic to your speech to make the facts verifiable.

Rebecca Weatherford was wearing a carnation lei and delivered her 6th speech titled” Creative Thinking” for her manual speech on vocal variety. Rebecca quoted a reference book on creative thinking that listed six common characteristics of creative thinkers1) Value Ideas and Opinions 2) Use Dreaming and Imagination 3) Embrace Ambiguity 4) Celebrate the Off-Beat 5) Consider the Path of the Screwball 6) Don’t Let Fear Get In The Way. Rebecca used hand gestures and good facial expressions to cover a valuable lesson in how to think creatively.

For Table Topics Rocky explained why he did not want to live in Laos. Rocky stated that there are not many Laotian Restaurants in Hawaii. Because they would have to serve Lao-sy (Lousy) Food. Christine Medieros wanted to live in Taiwan and said she said Taiwan is the place to be for a year. We had three new guests and we hope to see them again as members of DBA Toastmasters.
