Once upon A Time… Hanabata (Small Kids) Days – Toastmasters Meeting 3/21/12

Aloha DBA TMs,

We had another full house at last week’s meeting, led by Toastmaster Marilyn Cariaga. Marilyn chose the very interesting theme “Once upon a time… Hanabata (Small Kids) Days” so we could all play kids with energy! She explained that Hanabata is a local term for kids and all kids want is to play. Here we played…

We were honored to have Edward Joseph speak on the topic of drowning prevention: “We help because help can’t wait!” He said that each year in California over 100 children die of drowning and drowning is the leading death for children of age 5 and under. Also 61 people die of drowning a year in Hawaii isles. He shared with us how to use the principles learned in toastmasters to raise the level of consciousness and create a sense of urgency regarding drowning. “Drowning is preventable, not curable.” To prevent drowning, he urged us to 1) be vigilant, 2) be alert, 3) never swim alone, and 4) never, never, never leave children alone!

Mahalo to our newest member Shao Yu Lin, who inspired us by sharing: “there is good that comes out of bad and don’t let bad ruin the rest of your day!”

I am looking forward to seeing you at this week’s meeting on March 28 as we are privileged to have Edward Joseph back serve as Toastmaster. The theme is “Prince Jonah Kuhio”.
